AFUFA

GARDEN EGG

anaraAfufa is another kind of kolanut served in Amaigbo.

Afufa is rounded in shape and light green/cream in colour; it contains small white seeds inside.

Afufa is a delicious which can be eaten on its own or with okwa ose or ose oji. Afufa is believed to be the favourite among children and some adult who are not taken to kolanut. One of the reasons why this is so is because afufa is sweet and does not leave a bitter taste like kolanut.

Afufa is a seasonal product. It is harvested mainly during rainy seasons. It is ephemeral and therefore requires immediate consumption after harvesting. The seed tend to lose its freshness between 3 to 5 days of harvesting. A discolouration in their original colour indicates an impending stale or loss of freshness of the product and consequent deterioration.

There are also other types of garden egg known as Añara. Añara are dark green/yellow in colour. These are smaller in size and not as delicious as garden egg because of their slight bitter tasting.
